The Flikstik Early Numeracy Resource Kit

‘making maths hands-on, visual & fun'

THE 'FLIKSTIK'

- what it is
and does

  • The Flikstik is hi tech at the simplest level. It provides several simple but powerful models that help in the early stages of learning maths.

  • It is the decimal system  in your hand!

  • It’s fun and children love it! They especially like the dice-like random way they can strike number patterns.

  • It helps children to mastery of counting skills, then basic addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, place value, calculation, stats, study of bases, binary numeration... and 'you name it'!

  •  It is a hands-on exploration tool and toy that 'always lets children see and feel the mathematics thing that they are doing'.

  •  Incredibly versatile, it makes a fantastic numberline; can generate random number patterns; and can 'be' or represent a multiplication table! Then there are great probability and algebra uses....

  •  It facilitates new ‘number-family’ methods where students learn basic facts in a 'part-whole' way that teachers find very effective.

  •  Supports & enhances all curricula including American, British, Singapore & Australasian.

The Flikstik Early Numeracy Kit, $210
This is our premier resource. It takes children into almost all areas of early maths while building solid Number Knowledge to 10, then to 20 and beyond. The kit provides 2 Flick Sticks, a general Guide to Flick Stick use, a Video guide and a PowerPoint presentation.  Most importantly it allows permanent school wide licensed use of ‘Activities to 10’ (62 photocopy masters) and ‘Activities 10-20’ (67 masters). These activities drive effective Flick Stick and Number-Family use. Also, while this promotion lasts, there are booklets on Flick Stick Numberline use and Pattern & Dice use.

Additional Flick Sticks may be at as little as $5.50. Details

ABOUT the 'NUMBER FAMILY' CONCEPT & METHODS

The Flick Stick makes it easy to see and learn number facts
in the number-family groupings to which they belong.

With the Flick Stick children will learn the same basic
facts as by any other method but will primarily learn
them as members of a family or parts of a wholeness.
They will come to see all numbers as families. They will see '4' as 'Number Family 4' and will see '2 and 2', '3 and 1' and so on both as members of that family and as equivalents.

With Flick Stick and Number Family games and activities they will systematically discover and then learn the members of all families to 10 and then to 20. Then, having built up a number-family knowledge base of basic facts in this way, they can readily take from it the relationship knowledge that they need to help with various problems. In adding 28 and 7 the student with number-family knowledge can take from knowledge of '7' the 'handy member' that best helps with this problem, '2 and 5'. In short, Number-family methods and knowledge facilitate part-whole thinking.

The wide range of Number-Family activities for each family takes children into almost all areas of early maths. Children track their progress through these activities on a Progress Chart and need their teacher to sign them off on a particular Number Family before proceeding to the next. So it's a varied but systematic procedure.

Below: Joined '5 and 5' sticks make a Flick Stick numberline. All the balls were down at the start. 8 balls up (5 and 3) and 5 more 'read' now as ten-three or 13 on the top line. Then it's easy to read 'and how many more make 20?' on the bottom.

Below: 10-ball Flikstiks by manual alternation show multiplication/division members of Number Family 10. e.g. twos in 10, threes in 10 and fours in 10 - with a very clear '2 left over'.
