David Warlick, USA, keynote speaker, Learning-at-School Technology Expo, Rotorua 2007.  ‘No, it doesn’t need to be ‘plugged in’ to be an appropriate learning technology! I saw this device when I visited and worked with educators in New Zealand.  The invention of educator, Dr. Des Rainey, the tool’s richness is in it’s simplicity.  It consists of a rod on which colored balls can be clipped…  And here is the magic.  Thinking about and talking about how the balls lie after a ‘spin’ can only be done by thinking and talking in math. This simple little technology is certainly worth pursuing. Brilliant!’

‘Fascinating!  So useful when I talk to teachers about resources that can be used
to build part/whole understanding…’

Jenny Young-Loveridge, Waikato College of Education

Primary (elementary) students can build a 'number-family' knowledge base to 10 then 20 that will last them
all their lives. They are also exploring almost all areas of early maths including algebra & stats.

Multiplication and division activities help children build tables in an interesting new way, then develop fast and
accurate knowledge of all the individual basic facts within each table family.

Advanced children can explore Place Value, algebra, bases, probability.....
