Children are widely different in the Number knowledge and skills they bring with them when they start school. Those who are advanced when they start tend to stay advanced or increase their lead. Those who are behind tend to stay behind and the gap widens, especially for girls. Research by Jenny Young-Loveridge (1991) found six abilities which give children an advantage and all of them can be developed pre-school. They are 1). ability to form sets (‘gather 9 blocks together for me’), 2) recognise numbers, 3) recognise small-number patterns (as on a dice), 4) rote count, 5) forward sequence (know which number comes next), and 6) enumerate. Findings clearly show that children who started school with these critical skills were able to build on these skills more quickly than those who began without them and needed to master them before they could progress to more advanced levels. 'Flick Stick Maths' gives children maths experiences to build ability and confidence in the six critical areas and ensure they are well prepared for school. More than this it provides additional activities which further extend their skills and understanding. The Flikstik Fun-Abacus™ is hi tech at the simplest level. It provides several simple but powerful models that help in the early stages of learning maths. |
The Flick Stick Pre-School/ Kindergarten Maths Pack, $155 [For photos of children at play see Student Successes] The maths experiences which this pack provides were specifically designed to meet pre-school/kindergarten needs. They follow relevant guidelines and are informal or 'play' in nature yet they give children the opportunity to both explore math concepts and to build some solid basic knowledge. They best suit staff one to one, then one to two time with children as they learn dice and board game use, then simple number line activities and then the 'number-family' games where the Flick Stick becomes a powerful aid to learning relations between numbers. Some children will quickly be able to play games in pairs with minimal supervision. It IS a requirement, if Flick Stick activities are to be usefully used, that there be one member of staff keenly interested in maths and willing to oversee their use. The pack includes 10 Flick Sticks, a Guide and Activity Booklet, laminated games sheets for key activities and a PowerPoint presentation on CD entitled 'First Activities with the Flick Stick'. As you will come to see, the Flick Stick can be used in many different ways including imaginative and creative ways. Children and teachers love it! New Zealand pre-schools/kindergartens: order by phone or email and/or request further information. International: email office@earlymath.com for further information including quotation for delivery by international airmail and secure payment options.
Home Use The very best results for children from Flick Stick use are likely to come from parents playing with children at home or supervising their play. We are happy to enter into arrangements for the on-sale of parent packs. In local New Zealand situations we may be available to meet with parent groups.
